Frequently asked questions about Year Round Education:
  • What is Year-Round Education (YRE)?
Year-round education, known as "YRE," allows the school year to be scheduled over an entire 12-month period, rather than the nine months from September through June.  Students and teachers don't go to school all year.  They have vacations at various times during the year, instead of just during the summer.  All students and teachers have Thanksgiving vacation, winter break, and an abbreviated spring break, along with most state and federal holidays.
  • How does YRE work?
Tracy Unified uses a "60/20 calendar."  It is the most commonly used YRE calendar in California.  On a 60/20 calendar, students and teachers are divided into four groups.  Each group - or track - of students and teachers attends school for approximately 60 days, and then has 20 days off for vacation.  Three of the four tracks are in session at the same time, while the fourth is on vacation.  Students and teachers have three, four-week vacations throughout the school year.
  • Will students keep the same teachers throughout the school year?
Yes, students will keep the same teachers throughout the school year, but will change classrooms every four months.  This process is called rotation, and allows four teachers of the same grade level to share three classrooms.  Teachers in each rotation group will work as a team to plan how classrooms are arranged.  Special mobile cabinets are available for teachers and students to store their classroom materials when off track.
  • Why has Tracy implemented YRE?
Like other growing communities in California, our schools are crowded, and enrollments continue to rapidly increase.  Utilizing a YRE calendar rather than a nine-month calendar allows existing schools to house up to 30 percent more students.

YRE Benefits Students and Schools

  • YRE students enjoy continuous, well-planned learning opportunities in all core subjects and a variety of other areas
  • YRE schedules with shorter, staggered vacations can aid students' retention of learning material and reduce the need for review
  • YRE increases a school's capacity by up to 30% without increasing class sizes or adding portable buildings
  • The 4-track, 60/20 calendar schedules 25% fewer students on campus.
  • Over 6,200 students have been enrolled in remedial and enrichment Intersession programs since August of 1999
  • Over 4,700 Tracy Unified students are currently on a year-round education schedule
